frith wilkinson

“Frith Wilkinson uses the landscape from her immediate environment as a backdrop for her own stories , memories and myths. Wilkinson draws on the worlds she created as a child, which provided her with a sense of freedom. Her journeys to these worlds are mirrored by the voyages referenced in her works. Some delve into the underworld, or towards the light, drawing on the Classic journeys of Odysseus, Psyche and Dante.

Wilkinson imagined worlds were full of fantastical creatures and lands, rich with symbolism and strongly influenced by the natural world. Her paintings , which include images of birds, stars and numbers, are imbued with  a symbolism both personal to the artist and universal. Some allude to binaries of decay and renewal, the conscious and unconscious. But these symbols are not fixed, and are open for the viewers interpretation. Like the stories they may reveal or keep hidden, the stories are multilayered and always in transition.”

‘ As a jewellery maker I strive to create work that has an uplifting effect on the wearer. In my work  I strive to blend  translations of floral forms I find about me with constructions from my imagination and patterns that have a sense of history and time. I hope in this way to create work that is not perfect but through its simplicity and relationship creates  some  beauty.  ’
